Pernese dragons look much like the traditional depiction of a western style dragon: Four legs, two wings, tail, long neck, wedge shaped head, and forked tails.
They have two headknobs, similar to that of a giraffe's in shape, that apparently assist in telepathy. If you aren't entirely sure what they look like, then wikipedia is highly a good idea.
Pernese dragons do not have spaded tails (except in some art). They do not have fins, or even scales. In fact, they have smooth skin which regularly must be bathed and oiled to keep it from cracking. Dragons have the ability to Fly after a year of age or so, though during weyrlinghood they are exceptionally prone to cracked skin.
Once old enough, Pernese dragons are able to teleport from one location to another through a cold and dark place called between. Popping in and out of between can cause abortions, so pregnant women are highly encouraged not to go to battle in this way.
The smaller the dragon, the faster it can fly but the faster it can become tired.
In order to breathe fire, the dragons must chew something called "firestone", rocks which are somewhat similar to coal.
Pernese dragons do not fight against one another, nor are they hunted by the people. Dragonriders are considered heros and the "army" of Pern. The dragons are intelligent and have telepathic communications with one another and their riders. They rarely speak to any human other than their riders though this is not always the case; it truly depends on the dragon's personality.
Dragon Ranks Gold: Highest ranking female. The Queen. Impresses only female riders and cannot chew firestone. Riders carry flamethrowers during threadfall. Bronze: Highest ranking male. Impresses only male riders and is typically a leader. Usually the dragon color to catch the queen. Brown: Second highest ranking male. Usually impresses males. Some are big enough to fly queens. Blue: Lowest ranking male. Impresses mostly male riders, though female aren't unheard of. Usually the dragon sent of searches. Green: Lowest ranking female. Impresses male and female riders. The most common color.
*There are mutations, which may or may not be ranked separately from these.
