Appearance: At first glance, no one would guess how short tempered and nasty Leila really is. It is because she is slightly shorter than other Pernese girls around her age and overall her bones are smaller and she looks petite, even frail. Don't be fooled by it, though, because she trains a lot and her punch is quite painful. Even so, she can;t match up to a man so she uses other abilities, like agility and speed. Indeed, she is quite a runner and she is known to get into places where no one could guess she could fit in.
What also doesn't help with the 'cruel woman' image is the fact that while she is not drop dead gorgeous, she is still quite pretty. Small but with matured body, she is also graceful and walking around like a queen, she is bound to attract some attention from opposite gender she despises so much. She is not known to ever respond nicely to them, so, other girls has nothing to worry about.
Her face is heart shaped, with small nose and full, pouty lips are often pulled in smirk. Her eyes are one of the few sharp things in her appearance. While they are big and surrounded by thick, black eyelashes, which usually is considered cute, the cold, near steel gray color seems to warn she is not one who would appreciate being called that. If you make her angry, they tend to darken to stormy gray but if she is happy, which hasn't almost never happened in time she has spent in Weyr, they lighten and seems to gain blue-ish tint.
Her hair is thick and long, black as raven's wings. She keeps them braided in most cases and when needs to work, pins the two big braids up. In the evening, there is no bigger joy for her than let the hair down. But, actually, she loves her hair and to take care of it. On special occasions, she will let it down, too, and maybe even curl or make some interesting hair style.
Leila loves wearing beautiful, expensive clothing, especially dresses with frills and embroiders but current situation Weyr has forced her to chose simpler clothes, like simple pants and a blouse or sometimes simple a man's shirt. Strangely, she does not complain of it too much, unless she has to wear something bright. She doesn't like bright colors in clothes, preferring black, white and gray as well some other dark colors. Her own dresses are mostly of those colors, too, or mix of few.
One of her loves is jewelry and she always wears small black earrings just like the silver chain with her diary's key but rings are favored with her, too. Overall, she appears quite lady-like when can, despite her attitude is often the opposite. Her hands are still those of a lady, too, her pale skin still smooth and silky on them as she takes care of them the best she can. Only her clean nails are slightly longer than fingers, as she has decided scratching is a good way to protect her self if no other way possible.
Another thing that is always with her is small knife. Since the happening with steward, she doesn't want to feel unprotected and is steadily learning how to use it in combat, though, she ahs never drawn it against anyone in Weyr. Mostly, she uses it for work and such.
Personality: What is not well known but what sets her apart from other people in Weyr, is her dislike towards dragons. Actually, it is the very concept of dragon riding that makes her dislike them but she also respects them as powerful and wise beasts and often thinks they deserve their own freedom. What she hates the most is the concept of dragon riding and dragon riders. While she hates all men, rider men are most disgusting in her opinion.
Her dislike towards all these things can be purely based on her past, the reason why her beloved mother's spot is empty throughout most of her life. She thinks all men are liars and uncaring as long as they get what they want, always simply using women. So, the attitude of dragon riders in her eyes is something so fake that she can barely stand being around them. Which she also does as little as possible, leaving her room only when extremely needed or disappearing altogether for a longer or shorter period of time.
Leila is rather calculating, usually thinking of what goods would the situation bring to her before acting. She is also quite uncaring about anyone and anything around her, though, she is observant - so she wouldn't miss something that would benefit her. But despite these bad traits, she has strangely big sense of responsibility. It goes in hand with her pride, as she thinks it's truly shameful to fail any duty given to her, as big or small it is.
Her pride has also made her to become perfectionist.. She can grow annoyed, grumpy, tired and even throw the thing aside for a while but sooner or later, she will return to it until she had finished it near perfectly. Unfortunately, she often expects others to do the same as well.
Leila has her fears, like losing something very important to her... Something she hasn't even obtained yet and has no real idea what it could be. Or having all her secrets exposed, which could happen if someone read her diary. And she also fears she could fall in love. She thinks she is then bound to become love sick fool like her mother did and hurt someone in the end, for example a child she might have. But to not let anyone know of her fears, she won't refuse a challenge and she hardly accepts a loss, so if challenged she will do a lot to win and, unfortunately, it really mean nearly anything, if not all.
Leila doesn't like to display her real emotions but she is still only learning to hide them. She can be easily insulted, especially if someone thinks lowly of her abilities in any way. She has a sharp tongue and will most probably insult you back. Emotion hiding for her is hard, actually, as she very straightforward, so she writes diary that she trust everything with, and keeps the key with her always, even bathing, in a silver chain around her neck.
She is also quite sarcastic and nasty remarks will probably be the most you will hear from her. She has very little, if any, respect towards others - it must be earned in her eyes. It means she can and will say what she thinks to everyone as her quick, fiery nature sometimes makes her do and say things before thinking them over like normally.
Those who she cares about, often seems to be treated like possessions by her, she tends to speak in their place, take care of them at unneeded times and make do things only she wants and is overall, quite overprotective as if they couldn't defend them self. It is because while Leila cannot keep her angry and upset emotions in check most of the time, she doesn't know how to display love and care for others. Her father has always been cold and even cruel towards her and, unfortunately, she thinks all men are like than in reality.
Leila has little warmth in heart for others but what makes her brighten up are animals. She loves how they have freedom, so she would never take one of them as pet. She is slow to forgive no matter what someone has done but if you abuse animal, she will never forgive you.
She is the type who rarely forgets anything you have done, is it good or bad. As she is quite vengeful, you can never know when she will get back at you for something you did turns ago and don't even remember. It is why she is plotting revenge against all those who were involved in plot against her father. But the same is that she might unexpectedly help you because of something small you did long time ago.
She is silent unless she must speak or want to express her opinion, which usually is the opposite of yours. Leila doesn't like to let people close to her and she tries to be as secretive as she can, hiding any hints of her past. Unfortunately, if one wants to really wants to get to know her and understand her, it is quite easy trough provocation and making her angry as she doesn't really control her mouth then. Not that anyone has wanted to do that. In the half turn she has spend in Canaulia Weyr, she has not earned a single friend and it seems that she doesn't even want one. There are only few rare moments of weakness when she admits to her self that she is a bit lonely.
Of course, she is stubborn which can be both good and bad thing. There are times when she will simply refuse to see her mistake but sometimes she will just as strongly oppose to bad things (Or simply the things she is against). This stuborrness also means she often refuses to recognize her own feelings for others, both good and bad.
There is one more 'weakness' to her - love for all things pretty. It can be just a pretty flower of beautiful gem or dress but she will love it all and still doesn't know how to hide it very well. But if she doesn't posses a sin then it's Envy - no matter how rich or beautiful a person is, she strangely never comes to envious thoughts, wishing that the person would suffer and lose what he has got. Most what she will think is "I wish I had it, too". Leila also loves music a lot and misses lessons in it.
History: Leila was born in a distant hold from which she remembers very little of. Her family was not a happy one - her father was a harsh man, unable to treat her gentle, noble and romance loving mother the way she dreamed of. When Leila was about 5, her mother ran away from the hold, leaving a note that she is very sorry but cannot live this way anymore and has fallen in love with a dragon rider. Leila never heard of her again. These news were not taken happily by other hold inhabitants and in the end, her father decided to leave the hold and settle down with his young daughter in another one.
Unfortunately, rumors followed him, gaining even darker color and there were people who believed he has killed Leila's mother. In short, neither he nor Leila, who was a independent, 'foul mouthed' and free thinking child, was loved in the hold. Over the time, as she became more rebellious, the situation grew worse and when Leila was about 15 turns old, there were only few families that held neutral or nice feelings for them.
About the same time, Leila's life was completely destroyed, or at least turned upside down. Her father has a serious argue with one of the noble man about Leila's attitude and the outcome was rather nasty as he was short tempered man. Week later, the noble man was found dead and there were many proofs that he had killed the man .
Lord Holder reacted quickly and her father was exiled from hold. Leila had made quite a scene, accusing steward in the murder and telling that all proofs against her father were set up, so, many people disliked her even more. After all, like father like daughter - who knew what she could do to any of them. That reduced her chances to find a job - after paying the blood mark to noble's family, she did not have enough to keep the household running without making some mark by her self.
For about half a turn, she struggled on with living like this, refusing any help someone offered her. And then, she had an... Offer from the steward who she had accused. He promised to forgive that and help her with mark, if she only became his. About third time when he spoke of it, he tried to enforce it on her and trying to defend her self, she hit him across head with a bottle of wine he had bought.
The young man died almost there and then and despite that she had been only protecting her self, Leila was not treated kindly. In fact, she was to be exiled just like her father had been. That would have happened if not a dragon traveling trough to Canaulia who found her as possible candidate. Unable to talk against it, Lord Holder had to let her go, though Leila almost wished she would be exiled than to go to Canaulia Weyr.
For first weeks in the Weyr, Leila rebelled and refused to do anything that she was asked to, not caring how it made others treat her. But after some thinking, she understood that a dragon was exactly she needed to fulfill the plan of revenge born in her mind the same moment she had killed the steward. After that, she became very careful student, learning eagerly everything that she has to. Her anti-social attitude never changed, though.
When the disaster struck, Leila was at the lake but it didn't take long for her to understand what was going on. It was probably her speed who saved her when she fled the open space for the possible safety of the bowl. For a moment, she stayed in the hallway before heading down to candidate's rooms to try and save her possessessions. When she found it to be one of the less harmed areas, she did go back and help few people but only for a short while, deciding to stay in the 'safe' area and having a feeling she cannot help in the current chaos, anyway.
Now she is helping around the destroyed Weyr like any other Canidate has to but when she can, she will spend time in her room or go outside, trying to find something... Anything to help her, or maybe them, in the current situation. She thinks they should try and find some tools and make boats, even if the simplest, for someone go back to the main land and ask for help. But if it's not possible, she is willing to fight for her surviving here at all cost.
