In the 10th Pass, hundreds of years after the fable of Lessa's Ride was spun, numerous illnesses shook the planet to its core during the Pass, reducing numbers of dragons and riders until they could barely populate two Weyrs.
Of the two of them, one was stronger. When a series of natural disasters struck, the stronger Weyr was filled with arrogance, crushing Pern beneath its heel, bringing Holder and Lord Holder alike to its doorstep to beg for the food they could no longer grow for themselves.
Ista, the smaller Weyr, was disgusted.
Dragonriders lived to serve, not to rule. The elitist attitude that had developed in their sister Weyr was more than they could stand. When inter-Weyr relations worsened, the larger of the two invaded the smaller, insisting there would be a series of 'classes' meant to show the inferiors how to become 'proper' dragonriders.
After several Turns of pulling his Weyr through fall, fog, and fire, Weyrleader R'yn of bronze Runeth would have no more.
Having learned of timing because of his position, the idea brought itself to him clearly enough:
The only way to save their way of life was to start over. To move back through time, to a time when dragonriders were uncommon, to a time when they would be able to shape Pern's opinion of them, by themselves.
From all the tales the Harpers told, he knew exactly when that time would be.
The Ninth Pass, before the infamous tale of Lessa's Ride.
After much argument, the secret of timing coming as a shock to many, the riders of Ista finally, reluctantly, agreed.
In the Ninth Pass, they could live freely. In the Ninth Pass, they could change the future, at risk of erasing themselves from time itself. But it would make the future better for everyone.
With a team of riders dedicated to making careful notes on what they would change in the future, they established a plan.
Each Turn, a messenger would meet them at the new Ista in the Ninth Pass. Each Turn, they would receive a new, full report on what had been changed. A team of riders was selected to make the trip back through time, new leaders assigned in the stead of the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman that were leaving, and then, they made the jump.
Through the first two Turns, nothing happened. Nothing they did seemed to affect the future, according to the messages brought back from the Tenth Pass, and the plan began to seem uncertain.
But none of them could have predicted the change they would invoke.
In the third Turn since Ista was destroyed and Kazyeh rose from its ashes, a silver star fell from the sky, containing people who spoke a strange language.
Visitors from the stars, from entire other worlds. So concerned about their own kind, such a possibility had never crossed the minds of the people of Pern.
The visitors brought strange devices, had strange ways.
And in the third Turn since Kazyeh rose, the messenger from the future did not come.
