At the end of the Ninth Pass, with Benden and Telgar's Weyr overflowing with occupants and little land in the South designated for weyrfolk to retire on, Pern looked north. The Wastes, though harsh in climate and terrain, would suit well enough for the Thread-weary riders. To support them, Blooded sons from Lemos, Bitra, and Crom settled alongside the relief Weyr to form what eventually became Emon and Jenau Holds.
As the Interval stretched and became Long, the settlement grew and structured itself to better suit the ever-changing needs of the new Holds.
Marks became mostly unneeded so far North, where trees grew brittle and hard to press into currency.
The bartering system grew to an even greater way of trade for holders and weyrfolk alike.
By the time the Tenth Pass came into existence, Equinox had grown into a greater cohabitation with its Holds than any other Weyr could hope to boast.
But not all was well. With the new Pass, Equinox's rights within the conclave and its prestige on Pern shrank.
For what good was a Weyr that didn't fight Thread? What worth did Lords Holder have if they knew not of the hardship of Thread preparation?
And then came the influenza outbreak in 2957.
Masses of riders, workers, and holders alike succumbed to the raging disease, leaving the land with entire smallholds left vacant, tithing and trade routes unguarded, and the Weyr working with a mere three wings of dragons. The youngest and recovered riders were sent South, only to eventually be turned back North when the first hint of trouble rose.
Slowly, Weyr and Holds worked toward recovery. When disaster struck on the Southern Continent and Neile and Killarney Weyrs were forced to uproot from their quake-ravished territories, it was decided best for all that the bulk of the traffic go to Equinox - not only to give them ample living space, but to refill the losses so recently felt within the Wastes' sole Weyr. The Holds, too, were eager to take in the influx of hold and craftfolk, and many a Holder and Lord were guilty of not looking into their new staff histories.
Old tensions from the South followed.
Some new holdings have become less than dragon-friendly.

No, not all is well.
Welcome to the North.
