For Turns, Pern has been a rich planet where folks lived a simple life. The turns passed, and nothing much changed. AIVAS was discovered, but the miracles that it seemed to offer were soon short lived: People reverted back to the old ways which were easy, tried and tested, though the Healers, Harpers and Printers continued to benefit from the changes to their traditional lifestyles.
Thread did seem to have been eradicated. With the terrifying, deadly menace disposed of once and for all, Dragonriders were forced to find new purpose in their lives, but as Turns passed without incident, things changed.
Corruption became rampant in the Weyrs as the population of dragons decreased, and soon Holders and Hall dwellers grew deeply suspicious of those who had once been sworn to protect them. Now, it was the Dragonriders whom people required protection against.
Five Turns ago, small groups of Riders who disagreed with the practices of their Weyrs began to break away and slip off of the face of Pern, as if they had disappeared entirely.
Their Weyrs were outraged: how dare their very own riders disagree with their policies? A massive hunt ensued, sending the Rebel Riders fleeing into the depths of the Southern Continent where they formed a Renegade band.
A state of fear fell over the planet, until one Turn later, when a disastrous earthquake hit the Northern Continent. Tens of thousands died, buried alive in their former protection. Even the Weyrs weren’t safe. The dragons died by the scores as their riders were crushed. Colour made no difference Golds betweened as they riders died next to greens. None were spared.
The aftermath of the Quake saw a changed Pern. The Northern continent was abandoned. Half was completely uninhabitable, the land rendered inhabitable by the change in its lay. Water rushed in where once mountain ranges had been. Forests were now deserts and those who survived headed to the South. Not many made it. Out of the hundreds and thousands who had called Pern home, only a scant handful survived.
Out of all the Dragons of Pern, the only ones who survived were that scant group of Rebels, numbering only twenty seven. Hundreds of dragons had been reduced into this bare handful. The Weyrs, once revered were now empty. Ista had been totally wiped out, the island sunk by a huge tsunami. The Weyr was lost. South Boll hold, Fort Hold and Weyr were hit by the same wave, completely flooding the peninsula. The Quake had caught everyone of guard, there had been no warning, no signs.
Benden, Telgar and High Reaches Weyrs were all ripped to shreds, the mountains crashed, the land changed and the Northern continent was not as they once were. More importantly, what would happen to those scant handfuls of survivors?
The Southern Continent was not as hard hit, but tidal waves lashed the shores, destroying holds and land as far in as Honshu. Even the ancient ruins of the once proud Weyrhold was flooded for three turns.
Now that the group of rebel Riders is all that remains of the once mighty Dragons of Pern, they have been forced to step into the shoes of those whom they once fought and establish Pern's last Weyr: Tyrine Weyr, on the shores of the Great Southern Lake, situated carefully in the mountains where no floods could reach them and no hunters could find them.
It has been four Turns now since the Disastrous Turn that threatened to destroy everything. The floodwaters have receded, and refugees flock to the South as they catch wind of this whisper of hope: The Dragonriders are not all gone. There is a Weyr that survived the floods, with food and shelter, and Dragons to protect us.
Not all is lost.
At least, that is what they hope.
